Hi, I'm Carmen

Carmen Navarro Gercone is a management and public safety expert with 26 years of service in local government. Throughout her career in public service, she has been committed to working collaboratively, open communication, and compassion for others.

Carmen is seeking the nomination to be the Democratic candidate for Sheriff of Cook County in the 2022 election. When elected, Carmen will work tirelessly to reduce the violence plaguing our communities, rebuild the trust between law enforcement and the people they serve, address the public health crises that are affecting so many families, and will partner with local businesses to ensure their safety and success.

Carmen began her career in law enforcement in 1994, when she was sworn-in as a Deputy Sheriff for the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. During her tenure at the Sheriff’s Office, she was promoted through the ranks to become the 1st Assistant Executive Director for Court Services. She led a vast department of approximately 1,100 sworn and 200 civilian employees with around-the-clock operations, including the service of orders of protections, evictions, and the security of the courthouses throughout Cook County.

In 2013, Carmen was invited to attend the prestigious Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy with other leaders and managers from law enforcement agencies across the world. Carmen was trained by international experts on coursework that included public safety, homeland security, intelligence tactics, and forensic science. Since her graduation, Carmen serves on the FBI National Academy Northern Illinois Division Board. Carmen is the first Latina and first female on the board.

In 2020, Carmen accepted a position to serve as the Executive Clerk for Court Operations and Administration for the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Iris Y. Martinez, where she is responsible for the management of approximately 1,000 of the office’s 1,300 employees. In this position, Carmen has provided leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic, collaborated with justice partners on systematic reforms, and led the long-overdue transition from paper-based record keeping to automation via technology throughout the Cook County Court System.

Carmen and her husband Mike Gercone, a Sergeant in the Sheriff’s office, are proud parents to five children and three grandchildren. Carmen and Mike are active community members and volunteers, who plan yearly back-to-school supply events and holiday toy drives. Carmen also enjoys competing in triathlons and 10K races around Cook County.
